San Carlos Seniors Partner With Tutoring Program

"Volunteerism helps to keep you young and feeling vibrant," says Sylvia Nelson of San Carlos Elms.

The Board of Directors of the San Carlos Elms/San Carlos Development Corporation recently voted to give a grant to support the work of Healthy Cities Tutoring. The Board of Directors of the Elms is a long time supporter of the one-on-one tutor/mentor organization in San Carlos.  

Healthy Cities Tutoring (HCT) helps kids who struggle to succeed in school. Community volunteers provide one-to-one tutoring and mentoring to children to increase their academic success and self-esteem.

The program began in 1997 and serves over 200 children annually at seven San Carlos schools. 

As Sylvia Nelson, a member of the Board of Directors states, "We love the opportunity Healthy Cities Tutoring provides for seniors to help the kids in our town. Volunteerism helps to keep you young and feeling vibrant. This is a wonderful partnership and we are proud to make a contribution."

Currently, Healthy Cities Tutoring has close to 40 seniors volunteering as tutors with the organization. 

The San Carlos Elms is a rental housing community created especially for seniors. The Elms is owned by the San Carlos Development Corporation, non-profit organization established to provide quality senior housing in San Carlos.
