Recology Waste Moves Into San Carlos; Volunteers Needed.

As Recology plans to replace Allied Waste, volunteers are sought to help spread the word.

Starting Jan. 1, 2011, Recology Waste Zero will take over recycling and waste services for Allied Waste Services.

On Oct. 13, Recology will begin handing out carts to residents to get them used to the idea of a new provider.

Now, the city of San Carlos, along with the South Bayside Waste Management Authority, are looking for volunteers to help spread the world about the new CartSMART services. Volunteers - known as San Carlos Green Team Block Leaders - can help their neighbors and residents understand what to expect, what changes will occur and how the community will benefit.

Under Recology, the city of San Carlos will receive every week trash pick-up and recycling, as well as food scraps, a service San Carlos was the first to sign-up for, according to Monica Devincenzi, Recycling Outreach Sustainability Manager at South Bayside Waste Management Authority, a 12 member Joint Powers Association.

The additional cost of food scarps is $2.66 per person, Devincenzi said.

"We are looking for volunteers to serve as experts and ambassadors," said Devincenzi. "They can do as much or as little as they want, whether it be to throw a block party with information or to just talk to their neighbor who may be confused about a few things."

In addition, recycling will be more efficient under Recology. Devincenzi said the old model had residents separating bottles and cans from paper products for recycling. But under the new model, there is no need to separate the two.

The training for volunteers will be held September 28, 2010 on the second floor of the San Carlos Library Community Room at 6 p.m. Volunteers will be given tool kits that will help them relay information to others.
