Meet Your Harbormaster Scott Grindy

Do you know who runs the San Mateo County Harbor District? Here’s someone you need to know in our town.

Name: Scott Grindy

Title: Harbor Master

Organization: San Mateo County Harbor District

Office address: Pillar Point Harbor, One Johnson Pier, Half Moon Bay, and Oyster Point Marina, 95 Harbormaster Road, #1 South San Francisco

Years on the job: Less than six months here in California, formally from Washington State

When it comes to civic duties, what's your mission: Before moving here to Half Moon Bay, I have been involved in various support and guest roles in both grade 8-12 and Higher ED, with related efforts in starting financial foundations for both NASA Robotics, and Higher Ed Debate Programs.

What do you love about your job on the Coast: Coming from north of Seattle, for now I am just amazed with the lack of RAIN, you can actually tan here, versus rust. Above all the community has been very welcoming, helpful and fun.

What's the most challenging part of your job: Not getting sun burned, remembering to wear the sunglasses. Past that working to meet regional leadership for both non-emergency and emergency preparations of the district, along with general marketing activities for our sustainable activities.

Key services your organization does for the Coastside community: Beyond our services with both the marina in South San Francisco, and at Half Moon Bay, we also host many events for the public. This coming year will the San Mateo County Harbor District’s 80th anniversary, and there will be many festive events throughout the year that will be posted on our website for family fun.

When you're not working, what do you do to relax and enjoy life: I fly fish, and love to explore high mountain ghost towns of the west.

Who knew our harbormaster had such a great sense of humor! Glad he's here, tanning in Half Moon Bay and not rusting in Seattle. Pretty cool he likes to explore high mountain ghost towns of the west too. WElcome to HMB.

DEAR MR. GRINDY I am a 16+ year resident @ Oyster Point Marina, dock 13 and as of January, '13 purchased a houseboat on same dock but have been told by ex-owner that it ran but found cooling components defective that I've had to replace and am awaiting a hard to find a waterpump from Florida due next week. Mr. White has given me a 3-day notice to vacate by Monday. I emplor you to allow me to repair the engines with a two week extension at which time I hope to be able to move and insure vessel. If I cannot, I shall tow vessel out of Marina; This I Swear! Please respondto this Email by Friday so that the Harbor Patrol will allow me to complete my tasks. Thank you for your understanding and hopeful cooperation. Edward Barela III Oyster Point resident and SEA Disabled Vet.
