Major San Carlos Street Improvements Begin Next Month

The construction will improve pedestrian/bicycle safety, and increase access to housing, jobs and transit on Old County Road and East San Carlos Avenue.

The East Side Connect Transit Connectivity Groundbreaking Ceremony will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. at the Caltrain Station located at 599 El Camino Real, San Carlos. Elected officials, city staff, and members of the community are invited to attend.

The East Side Connect Transit Connectivity Project, which is federally funded through the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and includes a Transportation Development Act Article 3 grant, will promote transportation alternatives, improve pedestrian/bicycle safety, and increase access to housing, jobs and transit on Old County Road and East San Carlos Avenue.

The improvements will follow the undergrounding of the overhead utilities, and will include:

  • Completion of a continuous and consistent sidewalk along both sides of Old County Road 
  • Addition of pedestrian bulb outs to shorten crossing distances and slow traffic
  • Completion of wheelchair ramps at all corners W
  • Widening of sidewalks to seven feet where possible 
  • Installation of decorative pavement at crosswalks
  • Planting of new street trees
  • Installation of decorative, high-efficiency street lights 
  • Installation of planting areas to treat storm water
  • Completion of bicycle improvements on East San Carlos Avenue and Old County Road
  • Relocation and signalization of the existing pedestrian crossing near East San Carlos Avenue and Old County Road.

The project limits on Old County Road are from Bing Street to the Belmont City Limits. Construction is anticipated to begin in October of this year and will take approximately one year to complete.
