Laurel Street's Hanging Baskets Brighten Everyone's Day

The flower baskets are project of San Carlos Together.

Thank you to San Carlos Patch Facebook follower Holly for inquiring about the lovely hanging flower baskets that cascade up and down Laurel Street.

Holly asked, "The hanging flower boxes along Laurel are so beautiful right now that I almost drove off the road!! Can anyone identify the gorgeous trailing orange flowers?"

Well, it didn't take long to track down the person responsible for adding that touch of flower power to the City of Good Living's main drag---it's none other than former mayor and man-about-town, Tom Davids. Thank you to Tom's publicist/wife, Veralyn, for her help in obtaining this info!

Here's what Tom had to say about the baskets:

"The Laurel St. flower baskets include Bacopa, small white flowers that trail down from the basket; Nasturtium of various colors including white, yellow and especially shades of orange; Geraniums of various colors but mostly red and white; and selected annuals as the seasons change.

I purchase seeds in the fall and they are ready to bloom early spring. All the nasturtiums are from seeds. The Bacopa are from seeds and cuttings. Most of the geraniums are from cuttings and the annuals are from seeds and are purchased.  This year we struck it rich on the Nasturtiums and I hope they last another month or two.

For your information, the flower baskets are a project of San Carlos Together. There are 80 hanging baskets and the flowers change with the seasons. I have 40 or so extra baskets in my back yard just waiting for their cousins to die off.

I do most of the planting and basket rotation. I have one helper who plants the baskets and another who helps with fund raising to purchase soil, liners , fertilizer, flowers, seeds, etc. Bottom line, this is a great community project."
