Home Seller's reasons on choosing not to move Part 2

So to continue on from last weeks topics of things learned from sellers at the Swiss Park, let’s talk about de-cluttering or lack there of. Over the years, we all accumulate things. Our closets are full, our cabinets and drawers are full. Sometimes a bedroom is filled will things we think we need and can’t seem to part with. The biggest space filled with collected items is the place where you used to park the car aka the garage or worst case you pay a monthly storage fee at a local Rent-a-Space. Not very cost effective.

So you’ve thought about moving, but the thought of packing and unpacking scares you. At some point you’ll need to do something with all this stuff, usually sooner than you think. Here are some ways to make it easier. First you have to soul search and decide where you’re going. The city or area and also size of home are important. Then you need to categorize the stuff.

  1. Things you absolutely have to take
  2. Things you want to give to family
  3. Things you want to sell (eBay, craigslist, garage sale)
  4. Things you want to give away
  5. Things you want to donate
  6. Things you want to throw away

Note many things may fall across different categories above as time goes by. Set manageable timeframes to get rid of items. For example, give family members a deadline to come take things they may want. Give a last call for the coffee table for example. If they don’t want it, move on with it to sell or donate.
